Year of the Kid – July’s Blog

Wisconsin Foster Closet

It’s hard to believe that back to school is fast approaching. Where has the summer gone?  For many kids, it’s an exciting time. Back to school usually means new clothes, new school supplies and the discovery of potential new friends. But what about kids in foster care? This is where Wisconsin Foster Closet comes in.

The Wisconsin Foster Closet was started in 2013 by its founder, Tammy Wood Garr, to meet the needs of foster children as they enter the foster care system. As a foster parent, upon welcoming her first foster child into her home, she quickly realized there was a big need for children that come into the foster care system. Children usually come into care with nothing but the clothing on their backs and leave behind their favorite stuffed animals, blankets, pets and loved ones. Security and dignity are often left behind, with nothing to call their own during a traumatic time. This not only has an impact on the child but also the foster family that welcomes them into their home.

In 2018, the Wisconsin Foster Closet was granted 501(c)3 status. Today the organization serves children and young adults affected by the foster care system throughout Wisconsin, with the focus on the Chippewa Valley and surrounding counties. The organization is 100% reliant on donations from the community.

Wisconsin Foster Closet has evolved and now has different programs it offers throughout the year.

Welcome Bags – These include necessities based on a child’s age such as shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, diapers, and blanket.

Gently used or new clothing – When first entering foster and kinship kids often only have the clothes on their back. The Wisconsin Foster Closet allows families to come in and get 7-10 days’ worth of clothes for those kids entering their care.

Back to School – Wisconsin Foster Closet hosts a back-to-school event at the end of July which provides school supplies, backpacks and water bottles to foster and kinship kids. They are also invited to come “shop” the racks for back-to-school clothes as well.
